duration of AHS degree"



I was on the University Grants Commission when we, under the leadership of the then Chairman Professor Ranjith Mendis, worked closely with universities and pushed for and approved the four-year nursing [Allied health Science] degree. In a sense this change in the programme by Minister S.B. Dissanayake questions our wisdom, and the wisdom of the system as a whole.

Indeed if we are to follow the British example, where all first degrees I know are completed in three years, all our four year degrees would be reduced to three – law, engineering, honours degrees, etc.. It is misleading therefore to cite British degree durations as if we are governed by British practice.

SRI LANKAN YOUTH FIGHT FOR 

RIGHTS OF EDUCATION

Allied Health Sciences degree programme was begun in 2005 at the University of Sri Jayawardanepura  with the intention to develop the health sector qualitatively and quantitatively for the students who passed the A/L exam 2004. According to this AHS degree programme has begun in peradeniya, Colombo, Sri Jayawardanepura, Ruhuna, Jaffna & eastern universities. Allied health sciences degree contains physiotherapy, Medical laboratory sciences, nursing, pharmacy & radiography. Allied Health Sciences degree programme was established according to the request of many professors including prof.Karlo Fonseka   for a better future of Sri Lankan health service. Syllabus of these degree programmes were developed by the lectures & professors with the vast range of knowledge in these fields. This 4 year basic degree programme include with an internationally 
 recommended syllabus, practicals & clinical trainings.


To fulfill the purpose of giving a remarkable health service to Sri Lankan people. AHS curriculum was prepared according to the international standards. This enables good theoretical & practical knowledge regarding health sector.



As new challenges appear in the environment we have to have a broad spectrum of knowledge in health sector. AHS degree programme ensure this knowledge & enhance educational knowledge of health workers









Though AHS degree programme established as a basic 4 year degree programme in 2004. It has reduced to a 3+1 year degree programme. Which gives a 4 year special degree for few students who achieve GPA more than 2.8.this is a job oriented degree programme based on vocational training. So clinical practice is compulsory. As a result of Reducing of this degree programme clinical practice & research opportunity also reduced.


Countries as India, Australia & Middle East countries are offering a 4 year degree for AHS students. Here in Sri Lanka some authorities have  decided to cut off duration of AHS degree programme. Because of this we lost international recognition in jobs, because of our duration of the degree is lower than other countries. We believe this is an injustice not only for AHS students but also for the patients. While AHS students miss the chance of getting qualitative health education, patient also miss the chance of getting qualitative health service. So during last 4 months we all fight against this injustice & asking for basic 4 year AHS degree.




we are waiting at University grant commission to ensure our right of education.but no any response yet.....









Though we all believe university students are respectable & valuable group of people in this world. Here in Sri Lanka they hardly pay attention for our problem.
